AndreaMosaic Standard Edition
AndreaMosaic is a free project to create digital art using images and computer software.
First of all its recommended to read AndreaMosaic's comprehensive Help file before getting started with their first project, but most will find the effort is worth it. We were impressed with the photo mosaics we were able to create after getting familiar with the program. The program opens with a plain screen that has a dozen options for creating a mosaic. Even though most of the settings are easy to understand, we appreciated the mouse-over labels. Still, a trip to the 32-page Help file should be the first order of business to get a sense of the program's workflow; the navigation isn't intuitive at first. The most important thing you need to know is that the first screen is for selecting the image you want the tiles to re-create in the mosaic and to set the mosaic size and other variables. However, the first time around, two of the four buttons at the bottom of the screen take you to a new window to create an archive of images to be used as tiles in your mosaic. Since the Help file indicates that creating an archive is the first step, it would have been a user-friendly touch to indicate that on the initial screen or at least have more guidance on the window to create and open archives. Once you understand the process, the program is very easy to use and you can move to the fun part of playing with the settings and your images to see the various results.

On Linux you can run AndreaMosaic successfully with the free Wine Emulator which is available on most linux distributions using the standard installer (Synaptics, etc).
